If you own a new Focus RS or Shelby GT350 and you are reading this, there’s a great chance you are inclined to modifying your ride for increased output. That extra performance might eventually be too much for your factory clutch, which is why SPEC developed new clutches and flywheels for the latest Ford Performance machines.
“Obviously capacity is the first thing that needs to be addressed, especially the guys going with forced induction and blowing through the stock twin-disc,” SPEC Clutches and Flywheels’ David Norton said of the company’s new Shelby clutch.“We are also trying to reduce some weight. The stock unit is lighter than some stock twins but not as light as it could be.”
SPEC’s 2016-2017 Ford Shelby GT350/GT350R Super Twin clutch (PN SFGT3SST-0) is 11 pounds lighter than the factory unit which hastens the engines revving, but it also offers more clamping capacity, as it will corral up to 1,525 horsepower and 1,260 lb-ft of torque.
“It’s something that they can drive every day, is comfortable in traffic, and has an extremely high torque capacity,” David added. “Guys are already making a lot of power with those motors and they will just continue to make more and more, so we’ve got a twin that will hold over 1,500 horsepower and drive just fine in traffic.”
Not only is the flywheel lighter, but it is also more durable than the factory unit and it can be resurfaced and reused as well. SPEC even offers a flywheel compatible with the stock clutch for those who want to upgrade just the flywheel with a more durable, rev-happy unit.
“The flywheel was a dual-mass unit, so it was a two-piece unit,” David explained. “We went with a more reliable one-piece and that helped get some weight out and it allows the flywheels to be serviced where the dual-mass flywheels are not serviceable.”
Like the Shelby GT350, SPEC’s Focus RS offerings include complete clutch assemblies and flywheels. The latter works with the factory-style clutch. However, the company also offers its own replacement clutch, which offers more clamping capacity.
“We have seven stages of single disc clutches that are modeled after the stock unit, which is what’s called a ratcheting pressure plate, which is really limited in its performance ability,” he said. “So, we have another proprietary setup using our clutch and flywheel and that’s where you are going to see the most performance gain. We can hold up to 671 lb-ft of torque in a street unit by using our proprietary design.”
