PRI 2019: Optima Batteries Debuts New H6 And H7 DIN-Group Yellowtops

Optima Batteries is a monster in the aftermarket battery sector, and its impressive booth space and cars at PRI definitely stand out from the crowd. While we already saw and shot the Optima Bimmerworld BMW E36 Hillclimb build of racer James Clay, we were once-again stunned with its presence and tech running an Optima battery anyone can buy.

While there, we checked in with Optima reps on new product releases. It looks like the company timed its latest DIN group form factor for more modern domestics and high-performance imports at just the right time.

“We have the H6 and H7 form factors here at the PRI Show to fill a void in the market that we noticed,” said an Optima representative. “We did a soft release at SEMA, and realized there were many show cars there that required and H6 DIN group battery but were using an OEM cell since there was nothing available.”

Every year, the Optima Batteries team scouts the SEMA Show halls to find vehicles that aren’t running Optima batteries and ask them if they want to switch. While some SEMA show cars might already have sponsorships in place, those that don’t aren’t going to refuse a free battery, especially a premium Optima Yellowtop spiral cell. This past SEMA, the Optima team was armed with a handful of H6 and H7 DIN-group batteries and noted around 33-percent of the SEMA Show cars that needed a battery were H6, and they were also running OEM since there were no aftermarket options for them.

The H6 is an 800 Cold Cranking Amps (CCA) Yellowtop battery that fits popular domestics and many premium European sportscars. The H6 weighs 54 pounds and is 10.94-inches long, 7.48-inches tall, and 6.89-inches wide for a direct-fit in dozens of vehicles. While this is a marginal weight savings over OEM, keep in mind this is a very large battery under the heavy demand of modern high-performance cars.

A few of the H6 applications include Porsche 911, 928, Carrera GT, and Boxster, along with Ferrari 488 and 458. There is also a pile of BMWs, Mercedes-Benz, and Audi products, too.

The Optima H7 Yellowtop DIN-group form factor is more rare and challenging to find in stock at stores. Since it had a more limited application, the H7 DIN-group size was largely passed over by Optima but released due to consumer demands. The Optima Batteries H7 Yellowtop is a large battery with dimensions of 12.4 x 6.88 x 7.48-inches. The H7 Yellowtop produces an impressive 880 Cold Cranking Amps (CCA) and tips the scales at 60.5 pounds.
