Video: Introducing Project Gruppe R

We debuted our latest project car in January with a concept and a set of goals. While we have been amassing parts for the build, researching rally setup, scheduling rally school dates, and doing bodywork we paused to give you a more dynamic look into our unique scheme to transform this Golf R into a rally pre-runner or recce car.

To many it sounds obtuse to say the Golf R can be as good a platform for a recce car as the common Japanese alternatives. Proven to be a rugged and well-mannered alternative, VW Motorsports has blazed the path for the Golf enthusiast who feels at home in the dirt.

On our jaunt through the hills we demanded traction on gravel switchbacks, steering authority through the woods, and civilized behavior in town. The Mk6 has a long way to go despite it’s surprisingly capable stock condition. This car will shed it’s conservative frock in favor of an aesthetic more fitting of it’s pedigree.Screen Shot 2016-02-11 at 4.22.45 PM copy

We expect the visual transformstion and identity of Project Gruppe R to be met with a commensurate increase in driving pleasure, making the Golf R the hot-hatch it should have been from the factory. There is much debate on what the R denotes, race, rally, etc. But for us the R will be all those alliterative meanings and more. A true multi-purpose performance drive to tackle the real-world, and the unforgiving roads and conditions in which we drive.

Stay tuned as we delve into the mechanical and aerodynamic improvements slated for Gruppe R.Screen Shot 2016-02-11 at 4.23.19 PM copy
