The apple doesn’t fall far from the tree. Unsurprisingly, Chad McQueen is a diehard Porschephile just like his father, and has clearly spent a good amount of time practicing his heel-toeing. McQueen and “Agent Orange,” his ’71 911 ST, might be the quicker combination on these twisties, but pursuing them in a lively ’68 911T, Nicolas Hunziker keeps in touch.
Hunziker’s a vintage racer of some experience, and that shows in his ability to make the rear end of his Porsche dance as he pursues McQueen. It might be the narrow 6″ tires Hunziker’s running at the rear, but he looks as if he’s putting in a good deal of work—hacking and sawing at the wheel—just to keep up with the smooth-as-butter McQueen, whose coordination might lead you to believe he’s just cruising. Perhaps he is, but perhaps his 9″ Fuchs wheels are better suited for administering power—some 246 horsepower in McQueen’s case.
Their styles are different but the speeds are similar, and the effect is the same: these two, with their joie de vivre and willingess to dice on beautiful roads will make any automotive aficionado start saving their schillings for a nice 911 after watching this romp.
The blaring exhaust notes are sonorous, the scenery picturesque, the cars stunning, and the driving technique enviable. Who wouldn’t want to take a trip down a foggy, coastal Californian two-lane, drink a cup of joe, and test the limit of grip? Especially with the Prince of Cool?
