Ensuring strong and comparable performance across one of the most hotly contested fields in North American motorsport, the Toyo Proxes RR tire has been selected as the spec tire for the new Spec MX-5 Challenge. In an aim to expand the field, a single spec has been applied across several different sanctioning bodies, including NASA and SCCA, and one tire helps tie them all together.
The end goal of this approach is to build critical mass and create a national spec class in NASA and SCCA, with Spec MX-5 Challenge remaining as the halo series. As the Spec MX-5 cars will be eligible to run in SCCA’s STL class and NASA’s ST5 class, there shall be no shortage of events with competitive fields. Mazda is currently working with SCCA, NASA, and Spec MX-5 Challenge to allow racers flexibility in choosing race tracks, events, and sanctioned races with simple changes. With any luck, the pool of talent should help some budget-minded racers make a name for themselves on a nationally recognized stage.
A significant contributor to the competitiveness of this growing series is, of course, the tire. Perhaps no other modification brings a field closer together than a shared tire. Because the Toyo Proxes RR is known to be fast, long-lasting, and consistent, it’s been selected as the spec tire for Spec MX-5 Challenge.
We are very honored to be a part of the Spec MX-5 Challenge. We have enjoyed working with the Mazda Motorsports team throughout the development of this exciting new platform and are confident that our Proxes RR two-groove DOT race tire is the ideal choice, delivering fast lap times while providing great value. We look forward to the growth of this new spec series in the coming years. — Marc Sanzenbacher, senior manager, motorsports, Toyo Tire USA
To facilitate entry, Mazda Motorsports offers a kit that converts a street car, or another race-spec NC, into a Spec MX-5 racer. To encourage drivers to make the transition, Toyo Tires is offering a free set of Proxes RR tires for every one of the first 50 conversion kits purchased through Mazda Motorsports. Everything helps when getting a car ready for a highly competitive series.
Having a long-lasting tire with friendly wear characteristics will help drivers make the most sufficient track time available, which is critical. Practice will pay off, as the preliminary 2020 racing schedule and event structure will lead to both regional and overall championships with big prizes.
“Racers look for reliability, consistency, affordability, and products that make vehicles fun to drive. Toyo’s offering and support best met these pillars, offering racers an unbeatable value. This partnership with Toyo on Spec MX-5 — the generation of Miata that follows Spec Miata — is a big win for the future of the motorsport industry and for Mazda,” said David Cook, business development manager for Mazda Motorsports.
There’s a vibrant future ahead for this growing category.
