There’s been a ton of buzz around the Mazda Miata lately – with the 2019 model being announced earlier this week boasting its new 181-horsepower engine with a 7,500 rpm redline. Like we’ve said before, the Miata has never been about big power, but lets be honest, in many cases it still has plenty of opportunity to dominate those cars that are.
They say “There’s no replacement for displacement,” but this infographic found on RealMazdaParts.com says otherwise– comparing horsepower, torque, and 0-60 times of two of the (arguably) most popular performance vehicles.
The director of the site, Bob Cockerham, explains, “At first glance, it might appear that we’re pitting a heavyweight champ against a featherweight. Maybe we are, but we were considering the whole ‘there’s no replacement for displacement’ argument. We thought we’d look at how this high-performing Mazda compares to a popular muscle car.”
While the news may not come as a surprise to Miata fans, Chevrolet Chevelle fans may feel differently. Turns out, the 2018 MX-5 Miata has a quicker 0-60 than the 1970 Chevelle 454 SS. With its 454ci V8 engine, the Chevelle’s weight and 3 or 4-speed transmission may just be its downfalls.
“You might notice we used the 1970 454 Chevelle instead of a ’71 or ’72,” Bob said. “We wanted to compare the Miata to what is considered to be the best muscle car. Due to Mazda’s ongoing innovation, the Miata has excellent road gripping, handling, and steering. That’s not something a 1970 Chevy has. Maybe there is a replacement for displacement.”
The chart tells all. Even though the Mazda Miata and the Chevy Chevelle have almost fifty years between them, they both have quite the following. So which side are you on – the Miata’s or the Chevelle’s?
