The 2020 Nissan GT-R NISMO made its world debut at the New York Auto Show, with track-ready upgrades that maximize its performance.
In a statement, Nissan explained that the GT-R NISMO is as happy on the open road as it is on the race track.
The goal of Nissan engineers was to adapt race-proven technology and apply it to make the GT-R NISMO comfortable to drive for owners of all skill levels. Adopting the theme “absolute street and track performance” when developing the car resulted in elements such as vehicle control and predictability were critical.
3.8 Liter Twin Turbo
Each 600 horsepower 24-valve twin-turbo 3.8-liter V6 in the GT-R NISMO is handcrafted by its own takumi technician. The exclusive turbocharger design in the GT-R NISMO comes directly from the GT-R GT3 race car, albeit with a modified turbine shape and fewer blades. The new turbos optimize flow rate and enhances the acceleration response by up to 20%, all without a loss of horsepower. The exhaust system is crafted from titanium with handcrafted burnished blue tips.
The revised 6-speed dual-clutch transmission features a reconfigured “R mode” that not only shifts faster than before but also optimizes gear selection, especially on corner exit. The adaptive shift control also adapts to the driver’s style, making the experience better match the user’s expectations.
Lightweight Carbon Fiber Panels
The 2020 Nissan GT-R NISMO features an incredible number of carbon fiber panels throughout the car, including the front and rear bumpers, front fenders, hood, roof, side sill covers, trunk and rear spoiler. Each component has evaluated and modified to reduce weight and increase downforce. These carbon fiber components parts have reduced weight by 23 pounds alone, in addition to nearly 44 pounds achieved through other weight reductions.
The front fenders are similar to those on the full competition GT3 GT-R model. Scalloped vents both funnel hot air away from the engine bay as well as increase downforce on the front end, without any additional drag. Aerodynamics have been optimized to direct turbulence away from the rear spoiler, providing high-speed stability.
Optimized Suspension And Brakes
The updated suspension tuning in the 2020 GT-R NISMO improves cornering stability, with enhanced yaw rate response, along with better ride quality. The steering features greater linearity and precision, requiring minimal corrections at speeds of up to 186 mph.
The 2020 GT-R NISMO features a combination of the Brembo carbon ceramic rotors — enlarged to 16.1″ at the front and 15.3″ at the rear, with high-rigidity Brembo calipers. These new calipers significantly improve reaction time, durability and overall stopping performance and are finished in a bright yellow coating that resists temperatures of more than 1,832 degrees Fahrenheit.
Unique Wheel And Tire Pairing
The lightweight, rigid nine-spoke RAYS forged aluminum wheels are exclusive to the 2020 GT-R NISMO and are fitted with newly-developed Dunlop ultra-high performance tires that feature a wider tread with fewer grooves, which increases the contact area by a significant 11%. These new Dunlops result in higher cornering force, enhanced steering response and improved rolling resistance in the GT-R NISMO.
