New Lightweight Competition Steering Column For NA & NB Miatas

Though people might not think Miata drivers need to do much in terms of weight reduction, the lighter a car is, the greater a difference impact weight has. Try to chase a ninety-pound teenager in a kart and watch them stretch a seven-kart lengths on every straight simply by keeping their right foot down, and you’ll understand where I’m coming from. When sixteen pounds can be easily saved with an easily installed steering column, the avid Miata racer takes notice.

Trimming Heft

With the addition of IDIDIT’s lightweight Pro-Fab steering column, that racer sheds that weight from their 1990-2005 Miata for a reasonable price. Suitable for drag, autocross, road and off-road racing, the ultra-lightweight column weighs just 2.65 pounds. When paired with an IDIDIT Performance Quick-Release Steering Hub and aftermarket lightweight steering wheel, the 4.05-pound combination offers a 16-pound weight savings over the 20-pound factory column. In addition to saving weight, it allows the creative builder a little extra room to add aftermarket parts they’d previously avoided for fear of adding too much heft.

The Pro-Fab columns provide drivers with a rigid steering solution for race applications, and ensure years of smooth operation with sealed upper ball bearings and Delrin lower bushings.

An Easy Fit

It’s easily installed, too. No hacking or sawing required; the Pro-Fab column mounts in the same location as the factory item and even bolts to the factory mounting points and steering shaft. Slightly longer than the factory item, this column can be tailored by the installer to better fit the driver. As a Miata’s cabin is cramped even with the best of layouts, finding any extra space and comfort is invaluable. When paired with an IDIDIT Performance Quick-Release Steering Hub, the demanding driver can adjust the ergonomics to their exact liking. A comfortable seating position and interface with the inputs mean a great deal, especially in the confines of a Miata’s cockpit.

Using such a focused product doesn’t mean relinquishing factory amenities, either. The Pro-Fab system allows the user to retain the factory keyed ignition switch, factory self-canceling turn signals and multifunction switch on the column, as well as the column shroud for an understated appearance. For those concerned with running an aftermarket display, IDIDIT also provides mounts for Holley, Racepak, AEM, FuelTech, and AIM products.

“With laser-cut tubing and brackets, TiG welds and a brushed aluminum finish – it’s a true testament to the level of research, development and design we put in to new products,” says IDIDIT’s Trever Cornwell. Though there are flashier ways to modify a Miata, direct steering and an effective weight loss plan go further than most.
