The Camaro and Mustang have met on countless tracks all over the world for more than 50 years. From the stoplights of your local streets to the hallowed grounds of Laguna Seca, the storied battle between these two foes is the stuff of legend. And that legacy is likely to continue in none other than one of the greatest racing series of all time, Australia Supercar Championship.

In case you haven’t had the chance to witness an Australia Supercars Championship race, let’s just say that it is some of the most hard-core, door-to-door racing you will ever watch. It makes Formula 1 look like a parade (which it mostly is at this point, but I digress). And with Ford’s announcement that the Mustang will return to the series, rumors are swirling that the Camaro could do so as well, backed by GM’s Australian subsidiary Holden.

The flames of these rumors are fanned by Holden’s recent announcement that they will suspend V6 development and continue under V8 power. The connection is easy to make. However, Holden has been very tight-lipped over the whole thing. But with the Camaro set to soon go on sale in Australia, it may be only a matter of time until the announcement comes.

Tickford team owner Rod Nash expects it’s only a matter of time before the two rivals go head-to-head yet again. “That’ll be up to Holden to make those statements officially, but I think it’s a bit of a no-brainer that the Camaro is on its way now for sure, just as a result of the Mustang body being put out there,” Nash told Supercars Championship.

But Ford Australia head honcho Graeme Whickman says that he doesn’t much care whether he is going up against a Commodore or a Camaro. “I’m not sure I’m actually that fussed. I’m happy to race against any competent competitor and I expect us to do well,” he told Supercar. It’s unclear at this point whether Holden would field both cars or switch over to Camaros solely. 

Camaro already has a platform that would perform well in the series in the GT4. It seems that it would take relatively little, if any, modification to get it into fighting shape for the Aussie-based road racing series. With so many obvious queues, it seems that it will be only a matter of time before Chevrolet enters the fray and tries to put the Mustang in the rearview mirror yet again.
