Feast Your Eyes On The World’s First LT4 Swapped BMW M3!

When someone loosely thinks of the term ‘hybrid’, a BMW M3 probably doesn’t come to mind at first. However, this E92 M3 is every bit as hybrid as the definition itself. This particular European coupe is powered by a supercharged 6.2-liter LT4 V8 and makes nearly twice the horsepower of the original DOHC V8 it was once powered by from the factory.

The folks at Dynotorque have just finished what is allegedly the world’s first LT4 swapped E92 BMW M3, and it’s one hell of a runner. Craig, the owner of the BMW described here, says the car serves as a toy for himself, but also paves the way for future LT1/LT4 swaps and will be used as a learning curve for his company.

Craig entails that the M3 uses a hybrid mixture of electronics, such as the factory BMW ECU (for OBD II/ CAN bus duties) but also uses a factory GM LT4 ECU for controlling the engine operations. The factory ECU also controls some of the cooling functions, such as the electric fans in front, the thermostat, and so on.

What Craig enjoys most about the new LT4 swap is the power potential, as well as the sheer brute force that a good ole American pushrod V8 offers. He also comments that the E92 M3 platform was his weapon of choice, as he’s a fan of the build quality and interior room for his kids. For a car that makes 650-plus horsepower (thanks to a LT4 V8 no less), we’d have to agree with Craig’s taste in cars.
