2020 Grassroots Racing Calendar: Put These Events On Your Schedule

Getting started racing is only the first step. Once you’ve got a running car and all the required gear, finding the category which suits you is another hurdle. To help make your life a little simpler, we’ve arranged a calendar featuring some of the big national events for grassroots racing in America.

This is by no means an all-encompassing calendar, nor does it include all the offering out there, but it does hit some of the major series. This should give you a good start on planning for the season (if you haven’t already) whether you’re looking for endurance, time attack, autocross, sprint, or door-to-door events.

American Endurance Racing

American Endurance Racing (AER) is a relatively new series with open rules to allow all sorts of drivers and vehicles. It has even developed its own timing system which can move a particular car into another class mid-race if their pace differs too much from their competitors.

Few series will allow such a wide range of vehicles; one field in AER could include both Class A LeMons cars and World Challenge rockets. Drivers with a racing license with a major sanctioning body, drivers who’ve competed in five LeMons or Champ Car races, or drivers with a proven record of substantial track time are all eligible to enter this interesting new series.

Combining music, drifting, time attack, and road racing, the Gridlife events are something special. Nothing on the North American continent rivals the ambiance at these colorful weekends — only Rudskogen comes close, and that requires a long trip across the Atlantic.

Global Time Attack

With the simple desire of assembling the world’s fastest dedicated time attack cars together on a particular circuit, Global Time Attack has quickly become one of the most prestigious time trial series on American soil. GTA uses live stream broadcasts and partnerships with independent media outlets to engage a vast number of fans and competitors, and as a result, they’re regarded as the place to be for wild creations battling the clock.

Sports Car Club of America (SCCA)

Of course, the Sports Car Club of America (SCCA) is the birthplace of grassroots racing and holds an array of events across its nine regions each year. There are too many to list here, along with its two national tours in the U.S. Majors Tour (schedule here) and the Hoosier Super Tour (schedule here), but here are the can’t-miss major national events.

This year, SCCA will celebrate its biggest events in the midwest. The Runoffs will return to Elkhart Lake and the wonderful four-mile Road America — where the Runoffs called home from 2009-2014. “We look forward to returning in the fall of 2020 to beautiful Elkhart Lake. From the new Paddock Shop to new restroom and shower locations, and a new trail allowing access to fantastic spectating from The Kink to Canada Corner, Road America continues to enhance the participant, worker, and fan experience,” said SCCA’s Vice President/COO Eric Prill.

The SCCA is a candy store for autocrossers with something for everyone: Starting Line School, regional and divisional Solo, Pro Solo (mirrored courses), CAM Challenge (American Muscle), and the Championship Tour.

This year, it all culminates with more than 1,200 autocrossers descending on Lincoln, Nebraska, for the Solo Nationals. Along the way, drivers, friends, and crew enjoy a welcome party and tailgating late into the night. Plus, there’s a practice course and two awards banquets. For the autocrosser serious about speed and/or socializing, Solo Nationals is the ultimate destination.

The SCCA even has a national series specifically for time trialers, as well — the Tire Rack SCCA Time Trials National Tour Powered by Hagerty. You can take in one or two events near you or do the entire tour. Either way, it all comes down to the final event at the National Corvette Museum in Bowling Green, Kentucky, for the Time Trial Nationals. Much like the Solo Nationals, it is all about having a good time and getting to know fellow racers.

National Auto Sport Association (NASA)

Like SCCA, NASA has a regional set up (16 to be precise) with a ton of events and believes in moving its Championships to a different track every year. For 2020, it has chosen the long, varied, and relentless Utah Motorsports Campus, formerly known as Miller Motorsports Park.

“Utah Motorsports Campus is a world-class venue,” said NASA Vice President, Jeremy Croiset. “From the track layout to the paddock and all its facilities, Utah Motorsports Campus provides the proper scale and grandeur for the NASA Championships Presented by Toyo Tires. We love racing there, and we thrilled to be going back to Utah in 2020.”
