Some entering into the world of HPDE/track days are hesitant to go wheel-to-wheel, and rightly so. However, those with a hankering for fast laps without door bashing too have the urge to climb the ladder, and there needs to be a next step to sate their ambition. That’s where time trials fits in.
Increased Interest Across The Country
With the rising interest in time trials and time attack across the country, SCCA has stepped in and is now the official sanctioning body of Global Time Attack (GTA). Together the two groups made a few changes to the format to create more opportunities for avid track addict to climb the ranks.
The new agreement between the two organizations means a new accreditation program that promises to help new drivers climb the ranks into professional time attack; a structure already used by GRIDLIFE. Both GTA and SCCA will allow crossover for the quickest drivers in their respective series to help broaden the audience. Top-performing SCCA Time Trials Nationals (TTN) drivers will earn their way into GTA events, and the top 2019 TTN finisher will receive an invite to the 2020 Super Lap Battle organized by GTA. These new pathways should strengthen the general perception of time attack, and position it for growth.
“This latest partnership formalizes steps taken by the North American Time Attack Council to align GRIDLIFE, Global Time Attack and SCCA,” an SCCA spokesperson said. “This latest development is a solid foundation where each organization can experiment, learn and grow to produce exciting, top-notch events within a unique sector of motorsport. Plus, this now gives SCCA’s burgeoning Time Trials program a means for producing drivers who proceed up the ladder to highly competitive events hosted by other North American Time Attack Council organizations.”
A Clear Path Forward
“We now have a clear path towards Global Time Attack for drivers with little or no previous experience through this new licensing program and the Tire Rack SCCA Time Trials Nationals presented by Hagerty,” said Jason Dienhart, President of Global Time Attack. “This is an exciting time for time attack.”
