Video: Factory Five All Women’s Build on Display at SEMA

What’s cooler than a Factory Five Racing Mk4 Roadster built in just five days? Watching a crew of all women tackle the build, of course!

Factory Five Racing’s Mk4 Roadster complete kit gives you everything you need to build the car, in one big package. Everything comes with the kit besides the engine, transmission, and rear end, unless you opt for the kit with a rear end. The premise of the All Women’s Build was to build a Factory Five Mk4 Roadster in five days, but have a crew comprised of very talented women in the industry build the car. “Last year at SEMA, I was talking to Nan Gelhard from Summit Racing and she was mentioning how there’s not a lot of women in the industry and how it’s kind of a male-dominant industry, so I said ‘let’s take some of the talented women we know and build a Cobra,'” explained David Smith of Factory Five Racing.

The build crew consisted of CherieLynn Westrich of Overhaulin’, Nan Gelhard of Summit Racing, Jo Coddington, wife of the late Boyd Coddington, Courtnie Provencher of Factory Five Racing, and Karen Salvaggio of Thunder Valley Racing. The build was filmed for the TV show, Detroit Muscle on Power Nation TV, and can be seen on their website.

On day one, the all-women team made great time removing the aluminum panels that will be permanantly installed throughout the build, getting the suspension components, brakes, manual steering rack, and rearend installed. Once those components were on, the ladies threw on some wheels to roll the chassis over to their main work just to take them off again to get the car up on jack stands and really hammer down on the build. The engine and transmission were installed, along with the aluminum panels in the engine bay and from there, it was literally smooth sailing for the rest of the build – they even finished ahead of schedule.

What’s really neat about this build is that all of the women on the build team had a personal touch to add to the car. Being a road racer, Salvaggio brought some massive Wilwood 6-piston calipers for the front and 1-piston calipers for the rear. Rotors came with the calipers, of course. Salvaggio also brought some great Koni coilovers for the build, which will make the car handle great on the street and track. Coddington brought some special billet hot rod-style wheels for the car, which were designed by her son, Chris Coddington, to keep her late husband’s legacy going strong. Provencher works for Factory Five, so she brought the kit with her and chose the main body color, as well as the stripes.

Westrich has done a lot of sound systems in her line of work, so she brought a really stealth Kicker audio system to add to the car. Last but not least, Gelhard brought the power. Working for Summit Racing, she had access to the parts catalog, which means nothing but quality parts for this build. The engine is a Ford Racing 427-cubic inch longblock that puts out 535 hp at the crank and the transmission is a Tremec TKO short-ratio unit.

This build was really awesome to see in person and the quality of Factory Five Racing’s kits are awesome, We’d definitely love to build one of their kits at our shop, that’s for sure! For more information on Factory Five Racing’s available kits, check out their website!
