Last Hurrah Proponents Beware: Irwindale is Scheduling 2017!

Despite all the naysayers and journalists who write about “the last hurrah,” Irwindale Event Center President/CEO Jim Cohan announced today that the track is actively scheduling events for 2017.

Irwindale Event Center, one of the best short track facilities in North America, which includes the LA Racing Experience, Irwindale Speedway (NASCAR), Advanced Driving Dynamics, and the Irwindale Dragstrip (NHRA), has once again extended its lifespan despite the land being sold to a shopping center developer two years ago.

“Everyone here on the IEC Team is very pleased that we’ve been able to make this announcement today,” said a very pleased Cohan. “We will be continuing with our Thursday Night Drags, NASCAR Whelen All-American Series and Nights of Destruction, along with special events such as K&N Pro Series West, HotVW’s Drag Day, the NHRA Summit Series, Thursday Night Drift, Truckin’ for Kids, Formula Drift Championship, and ‘MoonEyes’ all being presented on their traditional calendar dates.”

The track had been under threat of the wrecking ball when the track was sold with plans of an outlet mall, backed by the city fathers of Irwindale. Despite attendance of all events being significant, the city politicians felt the outlet mall might stimulate local employment.

Opposition of the proposed development see Irwindale Event Center as a “haven” to keep racers from settling their quarrels on the street. Street racing is a leading cause of injury, death and property damage to the general public. The half-mile and third mile ovals and an eighth mile drag strip on the property provide access to many for competition and test and tune dates.
